Description

Description

Mousetail is a very distinctive yet easily overlooked annual being small (to about 15cm), green and early flowering. The plant consists of a rosette of very narrow, almost grass like, dark green leaves. From the centre of the rosette arises a long flower stalk topped with a single flower whose yellow green petals and stamen surround an elongated receptacle giving the whole plant a plantain like appearance. As the petals fade and drop off the receptacle continues to elongate giving rise to its common name of mousetail.

Habitat Information

Mousetail a native annual of nutrient-rich soils prone to seasonally flooded and disturbance by animal’s feet or heavy machinery. Often associate with features such as rutted tracks, gateways and hollows on ploughed land.

Growing Information

The seed is best sown in the autumn. Seed can remain dormant in the soil for many years.
