Houndstongue is a distinctive, greyish and downy biennial with broad lanceolate leaves and clusters of maroon red flowers. In bloom from May to August.
Houndstongue is a biennial of dry, base rich soils on ground that is subject to regular disturbance. It is unpalatable to grazing animals and can therefore be found in over stocked pastures and on the disturbed ground of rabbit warrens. It is also found on coastal dunes and shingles, field edges and waste land.
Easily established from seed sown in the autumn or spring.
