Stellaria holostea – Greater Stitchwort

Greater stitchwort is an attractive if somewhat straggly plant with large white flowers made up of five deeply divided petals. The rigid and narrow leaves are stalkless and arranged in opposite pairs held tightly against the square, brittle stem.

Habitat Information

Greater stitchwort is a native perennial herb most commonly associated with hedgerows and woodland margins but is also found on unmanaged road verges. It prefers soils that are neither too wet or dry but will tolerate a wide range of soils types. It does best on infertile, mildly acidic and moist soils.
