× Puccinellia distans - Reflexed Saltmarsh-grass (Ag)

Description

Reflexed Saltmarsh-grass is a low to medium height tufted perennial grass. It has narrow greyish or whitish green leaves. Its flowering heads can reach 60cm and are open with spreading branches pointing downwards hence ‘reflexed’.

Habitat information

Reflexed Saltmarsh-grass is salt tolerant so grows on open ground near the sea where competition from inland grasses is reduced. In can be found on mud along the upper edges of saltmarshes, on sandy-gravels, amongst coastal rocks and on sea walls. It is also found on in saline areas inland as a colonist by salt-treated roads and waste ground. It favours compacted, poorly-drained, heavy soils.

Growing information

Reflexed Saltmarsh-grass can be sown at any time of year when conditions are suitable.

Reflexed Saltmarsh-grass is a native species but is currently only available commercially as an amenity variety for inclusion in reclamation mixtures for sowing on contaminated saline soils and coastal embankments; usually with red fescue and creeping bent and other grasses.
