Glossary of words used in the site.

Anther… The part of of a stamen that forms pollen

Auricles… A small lobed projection at the base of a leaf (especially in grasses)

Bifurcate… Divided into two equal branches

Calcareous… Containing calcium carbonate (lime) normally in the form of chalk or limestone

Meadow… From the old English mæbwe—to mow or cut with a scythe. Traditionally meadow was used to describe an area of grassland cut for hay. Nowadays it has been used to describe a whole range of grasslands and flower rich swards such as 'prairie meadow' and 'annual meadow'. Throughout this web site we always use the word meadow in its traditional sense

Stolon… A lateral stem growing along the ground and rooting at the nodes to produce a new plant, as with strawberries.
