ESG2 – Fine Grassland Mixture

Composition

ESG2 is ideal for sowing buffer strips, margins and field corners. This mixture contains a better range of grasses than ESG1. The non-competitive nature of these grasses makes a good foundation for wild flower sowing.

Growing Guide

Ground preparation

Ideally select ground that is not highly fertile and does not have a problem with perennial weeds.

Good preparation is essential to success so aim to control weeds and produce a good quality seed bed before sowing. Roll fluffy or dry seedbeds with a ring roll to consolidate before sowing.

Sowing

Seed is best sown in the autumn or spring, but can be sown at other times of the year if there is sufficient warmth and moisture.

Seed must be surface sown: broadcast by machine or broadcast by hand (do not drill). Do not incorporate or cover the seed, but roll to firm it in and get good soil/seed contact. (more on sowing)

Aftercare

First year management

Top all plant growth (sown species and weeds) at least 3 times through the first season (removing cuttings if dense) to prevent weeds smothering the slower-growing grasses. More frequent and regular topping will minimise the amount of toppings produced each time so they can be left to disperse.

Management once established

Management once a grass sward is established will depend on site objectives. Follow stewardship guidelines where these apply. The low productivity of the grasses in ESG2 mean that the mowing requirement is minimised. (more on grassland management)

For advice on management when sown with a wild flower mix see ESF1

If you select this mix ESG2 as the grass base to create Flower-rich margins and plots (Countryside Stewardship option AB8) order with 2kg/ha of a wild flower mixtures such as ESF1 and sow at a total combined sowing rate of 20kg/ha.
